NOTES ABOUT THE
Design Process Notes
These process note pages outline some of the thoughts that went into developing the lighting designs. They are not comprehensive, but touch on the ideas that were most interesting and unique to the production. They assume the viewer is familiar with the play.
Some ideas show clearly in photographs. Others are best experienced in live performance.
Once a show enters tech, ideas mutate, mature, refine, or change completely. The process materials shown on these pages may or may not reflect those changes.
My design process varies from show to show. It's certainly influenced by the play. But it is also influenced by the director's ideas, the theatre architecture, the scenery, the sound, and the practical aspects of the production such as the schedule and the size and skill level of the crew. These pages show examples of some of this variation. They necessarily represent shows that had a more in-depth design process that included some interesting visual influences.
I've done many, many shows with a more compact design process. In those cases, more discovery takes place in tech.
